The North Surrey Eagles were confident they'd end their Cinderella season with a provincial gold medal.

Unfortunately for them, Cameron Canales and the Meadow Ridge Knights had other ideas.

Canales scored three touchdowns and threw for another to lead the Knights to a 46-0 victory in the provincial junior bantam final at B.C. Place Stadium on Sunday.

The loss ended an improbable Eagles run that saw the team start the year 2-3 before winning its final eight regular-season and Vancouver Mainland Football League playoff games to capture the VMFL title Nov. 26.

Afterward, many Eagles broke down crying.

"We didn't play Eagle football today," said running back Darian Fung. "I don't think there's much else to say."

Eagles coach Rick Farren attributed the loss to a lack of mental preparation.

"I don't know if we were overconfident or what -- we just didn't get it going," he said. "We fell asleep in the first half."

The Knights took full advantage.

Canales opened scoring on a 58-yard pass-and-run, and Malcolm Williams -- with his first of two majors -- added another score on the team's next drive.

Meadow Ridge led 14-0 after the first quarter, built it to 38-0 by halftime and never looked back.

"It was a sweet game and it was fun playing," Canales said. "Our linemen are the MVP of this game. If they don't block, we don't score. They just did a great job. Our whole team did a great job."

Cory Takahara scored the other touchdown for Meadow Ridge, which ends the year with a 13-1 record. The Eagles went 10-4.
